The University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495 by Bishop William Elphinstone, is Scotland’s third-oldest university and the fifth oldest in the UK. Established with papal approval as King’s College, it aimed to bring higher learning and clergy education to northern Scotland, and today continues to be ‘open to all and dedicated to the pursuit of truth in the service of others’. The Old Aberdeen campus is the historic heart of the University of Aberdeen, located in a picturesque area characterised by cobbled streets, and granite architecture. Centered around the iconic King’s College, with its distinctive crown tower dating back to the 15th century, the campus includes both medieval architecture and modern facilities.
HOW TO GET THERE:
- The campus is an approximate 25 minute walk from Aberdeen city centre
- If travelling by bus, a number of services stop near campus:
- Numbers 1, 1A and 1B travel along Union Street and King Street and pass the university. Alight just after the King's playing fields
- Number 19, from Broad Street, passes to the west of the University. Alight at the Sir Duncan Rice Library
- Number 20, from Guild Street, links the city centre with the Old Aberdeen campus and the Hillhead Halls of Residence. The bus stops on the High Street, right at the heart of campus
